End Of Year North Lakes Golf Course Update
Good morning everyone,

Time has certainly flown by! Back in mid-2018, we learned that the North Lakes Golf Course was to be demolished, with bulldozers set to roll down the fairways, making way for hundreds of private units,  threatening the environment and our coveted wildlife, causing inevitable traffic chaos and trashing the long standing 'Master Plan' for North Lakes that has 'stood the test of time' and on which we have all relied for over twenty years.

Now, almost six and a half years later, as we near the end of 2024, no development has taken place —thanks to the continued dedication of our community. It's been quite a journey, with many twists and turns, but our strength and resolve has been 'rock solid'.

Our goal remains the same: to restore the land as a golf course, have it maintained as a golf course, with a clubhouse and beautiful surrounding environment for everyone to enjoy.

Throughout 2024, no new development application has been submitted, so we continue to wait and see what happens next. The ball is still well and truly in the Developer's court.

Additionally, we know that the former Government proposed changes to the State Government Planning Act, particularly around how Development Control Plans are considered, which would have directly impacted North Lakes. Unfortunately these were never finalised into legislation before the election. While these draft changes looked promising, we now need to ensure they become formal legislation. If you are able to support this effort, please reach out to Queensland's new Planning Minister, Jarrod Bleijie, at deputypremier@ministerial.qld.gov.au to encourage him to push the draft plans forward. We believe the draft strongly maintained (possibly even strengthened) the prohibition of development on this land.

On a positive note, soon after the new Government was elected, there was some great news for Arundel Hills Golf Course and Gold Coast City Council when it was announced that the 'Arundel Hills Golf Course Temporary Local Planning Instrument' (TLPI), which had overridden the Council and would have allowed development on the former course, was to be repealed. You can read about it in this ABC News item:

We’ll keep you posted with any updates and please do reach out if you have any questions. In the meantime, have a wonderful Christmas, and we’ll reconnect in 2025!

Thank you all once again for all your ongoing support. Please stay vigilant!

Take care,
SNLGC Committee
